Forward Brewing Company of Eastport released a new beer to celebrate Pride Month. Called “Berry Proud,” 15% of sales this week go to Annapolis Pride, a gay rights group.
Forward described Berry Proud as a witbier, meaning a Belgian-style wheat beer, with flavors of blueberries, coriander, and basil. Forward worked with Annapolis Pride previously on flavors such as a Margarita Gosa, a sour and salty beer.
According to Annapolis Pride Board Chair Joe Toolan, the kick-off event Tuesday became even more important after the postponement of the Annapolis Pride Parade and Festival.
“This is one of the big events that we have this week to get the community together, and just remind people that, for Pride Month, our community is here, and especially under the current administration, we’re not going anywhere, and we’re still going to celebrate together,” said Toolan.

He said that collaborations like these go a long way to helping affirm the Annapolis LGBTQ+ community, and for Forward, that is exactly why they do it.
“I think in a lot of ways, Annapolis is a safe and welcoming place, but there’s always more that we can do,” said Claire Bowdren, co-owner of Forward Brewing Company. “I think there was clearly a need for a space like this.”
Forward just celebrated its fifth anniversary.
Dozens attended the launch event, excited to try the new beer.
“It was light. I tasted the blueberry more than the basil, but the basil kept it from being too sweet. [It was] well-balanced and very delicious,” said Laura Duncan.
“I [usually] don’t like a beer — I like fruity flavors, but I don’t like them to be cloy or super sweet, and it wasn’t that. … I’m probably going to get a growler to take home,” said Mary Lou Aberlein, who was at the event with Duncan.
