Ann’s Dari-Creme in Glen Burnie, which serves fries, shakes and its famous deep-fried hot dogs, will celebrate its 75th anniversary later this month.
The restaurant was opened by Ann and Ray Hines. Around 50 years ago, it was purchased by Howard Pinskey and Joe O’Brien, area business owners. After Pinskey died in 2021 from COVID-19, his three nieces jumped in. Now Amy Applestein, Stacy Frazier and Cindy Cecil own and operate the business alongside O’Brien.
It is unclear what the origin of the name is, but the stylized “Dari” spelling can be found across many dairy-based businesses and brands across the United States.
“We are celebrating 75 years of success in the same Glen Burnie location that has become quite the landmark,” Applestein said. “We’re just very proud because it’s still a mom and pop-run business that thrives on serving that community; they’re [the community] the backbone of why we have been successful for all these years.”
Applestein was also a part-owner of Bagels And … in Annapolis, also inherited from Pinskey, before it was sold to its longtime general manager in the spring.
She said Ann’s menu has changed little since her family took over because its status as a local fixture makes its clientele sensitive to change. Generations of people often return for yet another deep-fried hot dog topped with onions, mustard and chili, the Ann’s footlong with everything, but also for nostalgia and tradition.
“It’s not easy, but I think if you deliver a great product with great service, then that’s what the customers want,” Applestein said. “People do come from all over. … We’ve had staff members that have started as young as 13, 14 years old, working at Ann’s, and they might still be there. They sometimes come and go, but it is a family gathering. I mean, people just know us, and they come back.”
The restaurant predates the Marley Station Mall behind it, built in 1987, with developers originally selling the facility as “retail space behind Ann’s.”
The anniversary celebration will take place on the date the doors opened, Aug. 31. The restaurant will have giveaways and retro pricing. Also, the Facebook page will share stories and images from the restaurant’s history.
