La Michoacana Frutimas, a Mexican ice cream store, is coming soon to Annapolis. It will take the place of Roly Poly Sandwiches in The Admiral’s Court on Admiral Drive.
The new parlor’s name refers to the Mexican state of Michoacán, which contains the town of Tocumbo, where this style of shop originated, and over the past eight decades has become known as Mexico’s Capital of Ice Cream.
As such, La Michoacana has become a common name for unrelated Mexican ice cream parlors, sometimes with a word added on to the end, like “Frutimas,” or “Prime” in the case of the creamery in the Arundel Mills Mall.
Unlike many American ice cream outlets, La Michoacana ones often focus on popsicles in addition to their ice cream selections. They sometimes also have Mexico-inspired varieties, like La Michoacana in Baltimore, which offers popsicles with flavors such as strawberry with chamoy and Tajin, or flan. That store, however, seems to be unrelated to the one coming to Annapolis: The stores have different logos, and the Baltimore store has no suffix. An employee at the Baltimore store confirmed to the Capital Gazette that the two are unrelated.
La Michoacana Frutimas has a Facebook page already, albeit with no posts yet. The store did not respond to a request for comment.
When a reporter visited the location Monday, the space was empty, and some Roly Poly signs remained on the wall. A sign posted outside teases the store but gives no date for when it plans to open.
