National Night Out, an annual event promoting positive interactions between police officers and their community, will take place Tuesday.
The organization says the first event was in 1984, encompassing 400 communities across 23 states. Now, the event is nationwide and encompasses other first responders such as natural resources police, firefighters and paramedics.
“We look forward to spending valuable time building meaningful relationships with our community members next week for National Night Out,” Col. Orlando Lilly, superintendent of the Maryland Natural Resources Police, said in a release Friday. “Partnerships with neighborhoods and communities offer a reminder that there is a human behind the badge, and those humans can better protect and serve when actively engaged and included.”
Typically, National Night Out events feature various vendors, police officers, other first responders, and their vehicles, as well as snacks, drinks and more. Admission is free.
Precincts across Anne Arundel County are taking part this year. Here’s what’s happening:
Annapolis Police Department
The Annapolis Police Department will host five events across the city at varying times.
The City of Annapolis said that the events will include safety demonstrations, seminars, and substance abuse disorder resources and materials.
“National Night Out is a powerful opportunity for our officers to connect with residents in a positive, relaxed setting,” said Annapolis Police Chief Edward Jackson in an announcement from the city last week. “These events help us build trust, strengthen relationships, and work together to make Annapolis safer and more united.”
