Team of the Week
Liberty girls cross country
The Lions made a statement Saturday, winning the team title at the Oakland Mills Scorpion Crawl, topping a 1-2-3 Carroll County finish. Liberty earned first place with 62 points, beating out rival Century, which totaled 66. Winters Mill finished third with 88.
Liberty was powered by a strong pack. Avery Neilsen (20:27.22), Laura Melinciuc (20:27.93) and Giada Marrichi (20:43.22) finished eighth, ninth and 10th, respectively. Also scoring were Sarah Bergeron (22nd, 22:45.2) and Claire Broske (23rd, 22:54.77).
Honorable mentions
Manchester Valley football: The Mavericks won their second straight county game with a 16-6 victory over previously unbeaten Winters Mill on Friday. After dropping their first two games of the season, the Mavericks are now 2-2 and 2-0 in the conference.
Liberty field hockey: The Lions are on a four-game winning streak that pushed them to 6-1 overall. They are 2-0 in the county, thanks in part of a key win Thursday over Westminster. They added a 7-0 shutout of Bel Air on Friday.
South Carroll girls soccer: The Cavaliers ran their unbeaten record to 7-0 with a 2-0 nonconference win over Brunswick on Wednesday.
Westminster football: The Owls won their third straight game Thursday, getting a last-second touchdown pass from Rory O’Connor to Brayden Trupe to beat Liberty, 19-13. They moved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the county.
5-star players
Connor Stack, Manchester Valley, football: Stack topped 150 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the Mavericks in their win over previously unbeaten Winters Mill. Stack paid off a hook-and-ladder with a 66-yard touchdown to get the Mavericks on the board late in the first half, then sealed the win with a 23-yard touchdown late.
Aliza Miller, Francis Scott Key, field hockey: In the Eagles’ only game of the week, Miller delivered a win in a big nonconference game against Mt. Hebron. In overtime, Miller collected a rebound from Lily Bertier and put it in the cage for the game-winner.
Nick Compher, Westminster, football: Compher was the workhorse in the Owls’ win Thursday night over Liberty. Compher carried the ball 24 times for more than 170 yards as the Owls won their third straight game. He opened his team’s scoring with a 79-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
Anna Santacroce, South Carroll, girls soccer: Santacroce has been an offensive force for the unbeaten Cavaliers. In a 2-0 nonconference win over Brunswick, she scored her seventh goal of the season, her fourth straight game with a goal. She also has handed out four assists on the season.
Josie Conley, Gerstell, volleyball: Conley excelled in three Falcons matches this week. On the defensive side of the net, she totaled 22 and 19 digs, respectively, in matches against FCA and Catholic. In a three-set win Monday over Concordia Prep, Conley served five aces to lead the sweep.
