A man convicted in connection with a federal drug trafficking investigation has escaped from a facility in Baltimore, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
Kwamain Brunner, 35, who was serving the remainder of his sentence at Volunteers of America — a residential re-entry facility in Baltimore City that helps inmates transition back into society — is now wanted on a federal escape charge.
Investigators said Brunner failed a drug test, and on Sept. 1, left the facility and has yet to be found.
“Brunner should be considered armed and dangerous,” said Jennifer Mazza, deputy marshal.
Investigators said back in 2018, local, state, and federal law enforcement began investigating Brunner and his co-conspirators for distributing cocaine and cocaine base in southern Maryland.
According to federal court documents, a confidential source told investigators that Brunner was selling cocaine in Montgomery County.
The documents detailed that when agents later searched Brunner’s home in Howard County, they found more than $18,000 in cash, approximately 29 grams of cocaine base in his bedroom, and a .40 caliber handgun he had discarded out of his bedroom window.
“Brunner was taken into custody and the following year named in a four-count, federal drug trafficking indictment,” Mazza said.
Brunner was charged with possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Brunner later accepted a plea agreement and pleaded guilty to count one and count two of the indictment.
In 2020, a judge sentenced Brunner to about eight years in prison, including credit for time served, followed by three years post-supervised release.
Specifically, the sentence included three years for possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, and five years for possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, to be served consecutively.
Investigators said Brunner has a criminal history that dates to when he was a teenager, with arrests involving drug possession, weapons offenses, robberies, and assaults, including on police officers.
Brunner is now once again wanted by authorities and, according to the Marshals Service, is known to have violent tendencies.
Anyone with information concerning Brunner’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Marshals Service at 202-819-5058.
