A Carroll County grand jury has indicted a Sykesville woman on two charges of second-degree murder related to a man’s fatal drug overdose in March, according to a news release from the State’s Attorney’s Office.
Erica Davis, 37, was arrested Aug. 15. She is also charged with involuntary manslaughter and two counts of distribution of controlled dangerous substances.
The indictment stems from a fatal overdose March 16 when the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an unconscious man in a Sykesville bedroom. The man was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services personnel.
An autopsy revealed his cause of death to be mixed drug intoxication from cocaine, fentanyl and despropionyl fentanyl, according to the release.
The man was found with a hypodermic needle between his feet and a cellphone in his hand, along with white powdery substance suspected to be fentanyl and drug paraphernalia on the nightstand beside his bed, the news release said.
A witness told detectives they took the man to a home in the 6000 block of Charnock Drive in Sykesville, where he met with Davis.
Police said they also found text messages from the victim asking Davis for drugs.
Detectives received a search and seizure warrant for the home and found a loose white powdery substance, which they suspected was fentanyl, and drug paraphernalia in a bedroom there.
TThe Maryland State Police crime lab confirmed that the substance was fentanyl, according to the release.
Davis is being held without bail; her next hearing is scheduled for Sept. 26.
