Each week, the Carroll County Times highlights a Team of the Week and names five standout players.
Team of the Week

The defending county champion Knights took a huge step toward winning yet another conference championship, knocking off two county opponents who entered the week undefeated. Century opened the week with a nail-biting 1-0 win over South Carroll on Monday. Then on Saturday, Century became the first team this season to beat Winters Mill with a 4-1 victory powered by two goals from Tegan James.

5-star players
Walter Sallee, Manchester Valley, football: The Mavericks linebacker was the difference maker in Friday night’s win over Liberty. Sallee had two interceptions, including one that he returned for the only touchdown in a 10-0 victory that kept Manchester Valley unbeaten in county play.
Taylor Colson, Century, girls cross country: Colson bested a tough field to win the small school race at the Frank Keyser Invitational. She beat out Hereford’s Charlie Brill by one second. Her time of 18 minutes, 38.6 seconds was the second fastest among all girls divisions. It was her third invitational win so far this season.
Alexis Gilotte, Gerstell, volleyball: Gilotte had one triple-double this week and nearly posted a second. In a five-set win Tuesday over Bryn Mawr, Gilotte totaled 11 kills, 14 assists and 10 digs. She also served three aces. Three days later, in a four-set win over Severn, she finished with 12 kills and 11 assists, as well as eight digs and four aces.
Rylie Poe, Century, girls soccer: In a key Carroll County game with South Carroll, Poe scored the only goal to give the Knights their first county win and hand the Cavs their first loss. On Saturday, Poe had an assist in Century’s win over Winters Mill.
Makalya Shoaf, Manchester Valley, field hockey: Shoaf posted two huge shutouts this week for the Mavericks as they improved to 7-1. Shoaf blanked a potent Liberty offense on Tuesday in a game for first place in the county. On Friday against Mount de Sales, she made eight saves to shut out the Sailors.
Quotable
“Starting 0-2, it was kind of like a reality check. Our mindset now is just we got to win games and put things together. However we need to get the job done, we get it done.” — Manchester Valley’s Walter Sallee on the team’s three-game winning streak following an 0-2 start
“Something my coach always says to me is to have the memory of a goldfish. I know I need to be in the right mindset, because a mistake for me can affect the whole team, and I just need to be giving my all at all times.” — Gerstell girls soccer goalie Cambrie Franks after a 1-1 tie Monday against Liberty
“We had quite a few corners, and that one really didn’t go as planned. But it was a heat-of-the-moment thing. I shot it, and it went in,” — Manchester Valley field hockey’s Taylor Fique on her game-winning goal against Liberty.
