(Bloomberg) — An individual who the authorities described as a person of interest has been taken into custody regarding the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie in Arizona more than a week ago, a person familiar with the matter said on Tuesday night.
The case, which has attracted international attention, took a dramatic turn earlier Tuesday when the Federal Bureau of Investigation released photo and video images of the possible suspect outside Guthrie’s home near Tucson.
A video posted on X shows a masked individual wearing gloves approaching the front door with what appears to be a handgun in a holster and carrying a large backpack.
The individual was apprehended near Rio Rico, Arizona, which lies on the Mexican border south of Tucson, and was being questioned, according to the person, who was granted anonymity to discuss the investigation. It was not immediately clear how the individual might be connected to the case.
FBI Director Kash Patel posted on social media that for the last eight days, the agency and Pima County Sheriff’s Department have tried to recover images or video footage that may have been “lost, corrupted, or inaccessible due to a variety of factors – including the removal of recording devices.”
Guthrie, 84, the mother of NBC News journalist and Today show anchor Savannah Guthrie, was reported missing Feb. 1. Authorities believe she was taken against her will, with the suspect disconnecting the camera doorbell.
Savannah Guthrie and her brother and sister appealed for their mother’s return in emotional videos. Ransom notes have been received.
“Law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance,” Patel said in the post.
President Donald Trump had earlier called the episode a “terrible thing” and offered “all” federal assistance.
