Cedar Lane Regional Park in Bel Air will undergo an expansion project that will add about 3 acres and possibly an entrance from Route 543 to the property.
The expansion will use a 3.3-acre parcel next to the park on Fountain Green Road near the intersection of Routes 136 and 543. The property, known as the Sheffield Property, is occupied by one house and numerous outbuildings that are slated to be demolished, according to Harford County Chief of Executive Staff Joe Cluster.
Cluster said the expansion will make space for additional parking to Cedar Lane Park.
He said the county had preliminary discussions with the Maryland State Highway Administration about possible access to the park from Route 543, but the additional entrance is contingent upon what engineering and permitting for the project will allow. The engineering process, Cluster said, will take 18 to 24 months.
Funding for the expansion through the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Program Open Space was approved by the Maryland Board of Public Works last week and will commit $475,000 for the land purchase.
Program Open Space is a state initiative that preserves natural lands and resources, and provides public outdoor recreation space by acquiring and improving parks, forests and farms. The program is primarily funded by a portion of the state’s real estate transfer tax.
