The holiday tree is lit in Tiber Park and thousands of twinkling lights festoon many trees along Main Street. The huge mill wheel on the corner of Main Street and Old Columbia Pike is now covered by an ever-huger wreath covered in lights. The town is looking good.
Check out the shop windows, too — always fun to see the creativity there. And of course don’t miss the Holiday Train Exhibit at the B&O Railroad Museum, Ellicott City Station — always free admission and a must-see at this time of year. Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it!
Hanukkah (also called Chanukah) starts at sunset Dec. 14. All are welcome to join in the celebrations put on by Chabad of Ellicott City. On Dec. 14 they are offering a program for those 18 and younger starting at 10 am and for those older than 18 at 11 am. at their location at 9785 Old Frederick Road. The program includes a menorah lighting, a dreidel session, music and snack time. Tickets are available at chabadellicottcity.com. Admission is free, but donations are accepted. A second Chanukah party will be held by the group at 9401 Old Frederick Road on Dec. 15 from 11 a.m. to noon. Features include latkes and doughnuts, giveaways, prizes and light music. Again the event is free and open to all.
Similar events are planned at 8358 Main St. for Chanukah celebration on Dec. 16 at 6 pm, including music, crafts and treats. On Dec. 17 they will be at the Turf Valley Town Square at 6 p.m. and on Dec. 18 they will be at the Dorsey Hall Village Center at 6 p.m. Happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate it!
On Dec. 19, Backwater Books at 8156 Main St. will hold a Winter Solstice celebration from 4 to 11 p.m. Retail and service vendors will be on hand, offering specials and activities. Call 410-696-2482 for more information. Turf Valley is offering a Handmade Holiday and Gifts Market on Dec. 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A variety of vendors will be on hand and admission is free.
Crazy Mason Milkshake Bar at 8225 Main St. is holding Christmas cookie decorating classes, complete with milkshakes of course, on Dec. 19 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and on Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. Find out more at thecrazymason.com.
Benjamin Banneker Park at 300 Oella Ave., is holding an open house on Dec. 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Activities include natural card and ornament making. On Dec. 26 they are celebrating Kwanzaa with a ceremonial candle lighting at 3:30 p.m.
White Oak Tavern, at 10030 Baltimore National Pike, is celebrating with appearances by Santa and Mrs. Claus, including free photo ops. They will be on hand on Dec. 20 and 21 for brunch from noon to 3 p.m. and on Dec. 16, 17 and 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. for dinner. Reservations are encouraged. Call 410-680-8974.
The Artists’ Gallery, at 8197 Main St., is continuing its all-member exhibit and sale, “The Gift of Art.” This is a great place for holiday shopping — and buying local. They are open Wednesdays through Sundays. Call 443-325-5936.
