John Brown General & Butchery will be coming to Harford County, replacing the Boyd and Fulford Pharmacy that was a mainstay on Bel Air’s Main Street for 127 years before closing in 2019.
The building that holds the former pharmacy is owned by the Streett family. After receiving multiple calls from potential tenants, Jon Streett chose John Brown because he said he felt the business could be an anchor.
John Brown, founded on Falls Road in Cockeysville, specializes in grass-fed, grass-finished beef and pasture-raised pork, lamb and poultry. Its butcher staff keeps a rotating selection of house-made sausages, pates and other pantry items like eggs, vegetables, bread, baked goods, beer and wine.
On the first floor of the new Bel Air location, Streett said, John Brown will offer coffee, pastries, sandwiches and house its meats. On the second floor, it anticipates having a bourbon bar, once it secures a liquor license, and it hopes to use the rooftop for future projects.
Streett said that when looking for tenants to occupy the space, he didn’t want another knick-knack shop, but something that would attract more guests to Bel Air.
In deciding whether he should accept John Brown, the one criterion was “Would my parents be proud?” Streett said. He said he believes they would be happy with his choice.
There are no dates for when construction will begin or when the shop will open.
