My grandson Henry turns 9 today. We enjoyed a visit from Henry and his parents just a few days before Christmas — they live in Connecticut, and their favorite thing to do when they visit is head to Main Street.
We had a wonderful lunch at Uma Uma Ramen on Baltimore National Pike one day and then they headed “downtown.” I always like to hear where they went, as they are always discovering new favorites.
One of their favorite destinations is The Antique Depot on Maryland Avenue across from the Station. Henry always finds a toy he “needs” there. His mom scored a rare Patsy Cline vinyl album she had been searching for at Vinyl Treasures, inside the Depot.
The Howard County Historical Society has mounted a new exhibit at the Welcome Center at 8267 Main Street. “Tragedy and Resilience” tells the history of flood events and community recovery in Ellicott City, highlighting the two “millennium” floods in 2016 and 2018. They received grant funding from the Patapsco Heritage Greenway, exhibit space and partnership support from Visit Howard County and the participation of the Howard County Department of Public Works on the development of “safe and sound” panels. The display includes a video showing the power of nature and the indomitable spirit of Ellicott City’s community. The center is open daily, and admission is free.
Howard County Restaurant Weeks and Craft Beverages will be held from Jan. 19 to Feb. 1. At this writing, Alexandra’s American Fusion, the Manor Hill Tavern and the White Oak Tavern are Ellicott City restaurants taking part. Check visithowardcounty.com for updates and menus.

Have you ever looked up in the sky and spotted a black bird and wondered if it was a crow or a raven? Well, the Howard County Conservancy can help you with that. They are holding a “Corvid Conundrum” presentation to help you tell the difference on Jan. 24 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at their center at 10520 Old Frederick Road. The cost is $5, and advance registration is required. Visit wf.donorperfect.net to register.
Mary’s Land Farm at 4979 Sheppard Lane has plenty to keep you busy during the January lull. First, they are offering a winter indoor farmers’ market every Saturday through April 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the greenhouse. On Jan. 17, you can enjoy a cozy winter in Northern Italy via a cooking class, to be held from noon to 2:30 p.m. And, if you want to get away from it all for a weekend, they are offering a “Winter Wonderland Photography Retreat” at their inn from Jan. 23 to 25.
